The Winning Golf Swing

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

Playing a game of golf is not the same as playing a good game of golf. Anyone can take a golf club, swing it and hit the ball. This does not a golf player make. I remember my first time on the golf course. I, of course, had no idea of what type of club to use until a friend made a recommendation for me. I had a long ways to go to catch up, so I swung and I swung hard. My ball traveled a great distance-into the next person’s fairway. It was then that I learned about the golf grip, the golf swing, and the importance of both. Many people don’t know what a good golf grip is, much less, how it affects your game. They often wonder how or where you get a good golf grip. Can you buy one? Is it an inherited thing? Inexperienced golfers will often ask these questions about getting the right golf grip.

A good golf grip is something you gain with practice and time. It cannot be too loose or too tight. It’s also not the same for two different people. Every golfer has different size hands and different strength and use different size golf clubs. Playing with the same set of golf clubs will help you to determine the correct golf grip. Most golfers will use the same golf club for specific shots and therefore get accustomed to a certain grip, which works for them. There are many tips you can get on golf swings and golf grips. I use the two terms together because one affects the other.

Relaxation is very important in golfing. If you find that you are constantly reminding yourself how to grip the club during a game, this may be very distracting and make your grip worse, especially if you begin to sweat. One important key to remember is to not grip the club when it is next to the ball and ready to hit. When you grip it at this time, you will be putting the club in the palm of your hand instead of in your fingers, where it should be. The club should be in the upright position facing up when you put your fingers around it to get the grip.

If the grip is slick or sweaty, this may cause you to squeeze the club too hard, which will give your arms and shoulders tension. The result of this is usually a quick and short swing, which will not go very far. It takes a lot of practice to not get too large of a grip or too slow of one, which will both result in inaccurate and ineffective swings. Your hands and consequently your swings react by the kind of grip that is put on the golf club.

Practice is the best way to work on your grip. When you are alone either on the driving range or on the course, you are relaxed and will shoot better. The more you work on your grip and swing, the better it will become. When you are on the course during an actual game, your grip will come natural if you practice in between games.

Scottish Golf

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

The precise origins of modern golf are difficult to establish as, although the Chinese game of chuiwa may have played a part in its development, the French game of chambot, its identical English equivalent cambuca and the Roman game of paganica could equally have done so. Historical records cite the birthplace of modern golf in Scotland where, in 1457, James II tried to bar the playing of the game as he felt his subjects should be improving their archery skills instead.

Although golf is a ball sport, unlike most currently enjoyed, it does not require a pitch on which to play it. As a result, for centuries, Scotland has naturally provided a variety of suitable sites which are ideal for establishing a golf course. Whilst a standard course has 18 holes, each sited on a putting green and marked by a flag, the distance between tee and hole varies, as does the length of the fairway, rough areas, bunkers and water and other hazards en route.

It’s not particularly difficult to see why golf is such a popular sport. Not only is it a precision game but one which consistently offers new challenges. Even playing the same course, the length from tee to hole varies as does the par number of strokes per hole and, being played outdoors in undulating, open spaces the weather often throws in unexpected effects in terms of the flight of the ball. Fortunately, for golf lovers, James II was unsuccessful in his bid to stop the playing of golf in Scotland and the country now boasts some of the world’s most prestigious courses. It also makes Scotland an attractive venue in terms of the UK golf breaks available.

The UK has a considerable number of excellent golf courses, many of which provide host venues for international competitions. This has naturally led to a wide selection of UK golf breaks tour operators provide, catering not only for those who wish to play on these well known courses but also for others who may simply want to watch the professionals play in competition.

Because the modern game of golf has Scottish origins, golf courses in Scotland overall are probably better known than those within England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Modern golf resorts are a far cry from the early courses, usually just inland from the beach and built on soil covered dunes (links land) and, in part due to live television coverage of prestigious tournaments, St Andrews, Carnoustie, Turnberry Ailsa, Royal Dornoch and Muirfield have become instantly associated with golf.

Golf courses and their associated facilities not only require a lot of land but varied terrain with good natural drainage. The spread of population, geology, natural beauty and changeable climate are all conducive to encouraging golf in Scotland.

Golf has much to offer. Whilst the number of holes per course is generally the same, each course has many individual features, any two holes are rarely the same in terms of distance from the tee, local vegetation and other potential hazards. Also, being an exclusively outdoor game, the prevailing weather can easily add in unexpected challenges – and frequently does.

Maybe with fewer conflicts to resolve by bow and arrow these days, James II would have acquiesced and even become a keen golfer himself!
