Golfing in Northern California: The Seven Best Courses

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Northern California houses some of the best golf courses in the world. This is more the case than anything in the Monterey Peninsula, which happens to boast four of the top seven golf courses in the upper part of the state. While some of the courses might be pretty pricey, like Pebble Beach and Spyglass, others are very reasonably priced for the average golfer. All-in-all, the courses placed in the next few paragraphs are places that you need to get out to at some stage in your life.

While making this decision is not set in stone and will differ in accordance with personal preference, I believe the selection below encompass what every golfer deems “the perfect course.” So, without further ado, here’s my selection of the top golf courses in northern California:

1. Pebble Beach Golf Links – Pebble Beach, CA

The iconic Pebble Beach isn’t just thought to be among the best places to golf in all of California, but also as among the best courses to play in the world. In fact, it was the initial public course picked as the #1 course in the world by Golf Digest. The majestic course is situated right on the coastline and offers beautiful views of Carmel Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Designed in 1919 by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, Pebble Beach has hosted the U.S. Open 5 different times in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000 and 2010.

2. Spyglass Hill Golf Course – Pebble Beach, CA

Spyglass, nicknamed “the Glass,” was designed by the well-known Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in 1966 and has stunning views of the Pacific Ocean on its initial 5 holes. This is the second of four courses on this list on the Moneterey Peninsual.

The course is so widely recognized for its superb style and design and beauty, that Golf Digest ranked it 5th on “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.” Spyglass is also amongst the courses in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am rotation.

3. Poppy Hills – Pebble Beach, CA

This tree-lined golf course is the third course listed in my choice of the seven best golf courses in northern California found in the Pebble Beach region. Although it doesn’t have the ocean views of some of it’s Monterey Peninsual cousins, it’s tree-lined fairways set the scene for this remarkably constructed course.

With it’s many dog-leg fairways, Poppy Hills was placed among the finest courses in northern California as well as in the top 20 courses in all of California.

4. Coyote Creek Golf Club – San Jose, CA

The Coyote Creek Golf Club is the only Jack Nicklaus signature golf course within the bay area and it is the most popular spot to play for all of the area sports celebrities from teams like the 49′ers and Giants. Its immaculate design and superb layout was acknowledged in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” and was presented with a rating of 4.5 stars.

5. TPC Harding – San Francisco, CA

After a very long stint of not being a major course and some necessary redevelopment, TPC Harding is yet again a PGA Tour Tournament Players Club course. Harding Park is the most recognized golfing location within the San Francisco city limits and is very affordable to San Francisco and Bay Area inhabitants.

The course was opened up in 1925 and was home to the 2009 Presidential Cup and the 2010/2011 Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

6. Winchester Country Club – Meadow Vista, CA

Hidden in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s in Meadow Vista, this exlcusive Championship northern California golf course was the very last course made by the prominent father-son duo of Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Jr. The course was considered to be The Best Residential Golf Course in America by Golf Weekly.

7. Monterey Pines Golf Course – Monterey, CA

The last choice in my list of the seven best golf courses in northern California is also the 4th course based in the Monterey area. Monterey Pines was initially intended as a 9-hole course by Robert Muir Graves in 1963. The back 9 was added in 1972 and the course was newly designed in 2009 by Marc Messier.

Nicknamed the “Navy Course,” Monterey Pines is taken care of and managed by the Navy Golf Program. This course is the excellent golfing destination for beginning golfers and experienced golfers alike. It is hard enough to work on your game and enjoyable enough to enjoy a full round of 18.

There’s lots of superb golfing opportunities in Northern California, and the above mentioned are some of the finest. Regardless if you are an enthusiastic golfer, or somebody that just loves getting out there and hitting the links, these courses offer a superb experience.

Basic Golfing Tips For Beginners: 2

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

‘Drive for show, but putt for the dough’ is what we’ve all seen and understood from professional golfers in every tournament and championship either live or on TV.

The masters of golf can drive a ball from here to eternity, but it all boils down to how many strikes of the ball it takes to put the ball in the hole. The long accurate drives don’t amount to anything if you’re unable to putt the ball accurately.

The choice of putter is very important, but knowing how to use that putter consistently, is even more important. For example, I’ve had the same putter for fifteen years, so I know what it feels like in my hand, I know it’s weight and I know how all that plays into my putts.

Putting takes a lot of practice. Typically, we drive the ball eighteen times in a game, but putt at least double that number. So doesn’t it stand that we should practice our putting at least twice as much as driving? If you can’t get to the practice green regularly, just practice on your carpet at home.

Keep in mind that no ball can make it into the hole, if it doesn’t have enough power behind it to get it there. Take the time to get down on the grass and look at the path from your ball to the hole. Does it slant one way or the other? Is it uphill or downhill?

Stand with your feet spread for balance and line up the putt. Keep you hands, arms and shoulders completely still. Imagine that you are a “bobble head” but you move from just below your chest. Keep your head directly over the ball. Pull your club back; keep your hands, wrists, arms and shoulders steady – the movement comes from your chest. Hit the ball, following it through with your club.

Learn from each putt and remember the lesson. Practice, practice, practice!

Should You Think About Purchasing Previously Owned Electric Golf Cars?

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Although many people prefer the power of a gas golf cart, electric carts are now the firm favorite for many uses, including riding around the fairway. Electric cars are however springing up all over the place from large manufacturing complexes to retirement villages and educational institutions. A new electric cart these days comes with a pretty heavy price tag and could easily have you writing a check for $12,000 to $15,000. For this reason, more and more people are looking at used electric golf buggies when it comes time to buy.

For many people the advantage to buying an electric car is that it is almost silent to drive and you can run around in it in the knowledge that you are doing your part to help the environment. Without those frequent oil and filter changes required by gas powered cars, electric carts are virtually maintenance free. That said, there is of course some minor maintenance needed, including occasional battery replacements.

Another great thing about buying an electric cart is the fact that manufacturers offer a very wide range of opportunities for customization. This means that, when you buy a used cart, you can often get a cart which has already been extensively customized for you by its previous owner. You can potentially have the most distinctive cart on the course.

There is of course the odd drawback to the electric cart and the biggest of these is the limited range resulting from running on batteries. This also means that electric carts cannot run accessories which draw heavily on the battery and this means that you are precluded from installing such things as heating or air conditioning units.

As far as re-charging goes, this can be either a positive or a negative feature depending upon how you look at it. For example, there cannot really be anything more convenient than simply plugging you cart in at the end of the day and then unplugging it the following morning. On the other hand however this might not seem like such a good idea when it come time to pay your electricity bill.

Locating used electric golf buggies either within your local area or online is almost certainly going to be easier than you think. The secondhand market today is thriving so, as long as you know exactly what you are looking for, your search should not take too long.
