Kellen Moore Establishes Himself As The Heisman Frontrunner in Week 1 Of College Football

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Week 1 of the college football season is now pretty much in the books and of the top 4 Heisman hopefuls Kellen Moore, senior QB for the Boise State Broncos has clearly established himself as the frontrunner in what many thought was a race that was set up for QB Andrew Luck of Stanford to lose.

Luck, as the pre-season Heisman favorite should have posted big numbers in the opener against lowly San Jose State. The Cardinals dominated the Spartans in every aspect of the game yet Luck had a less than stellar performance completing just 17 of 26 pass attempts for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. His 65 pct. completion rate and yardage were enough to lead Stanford to the win, but not the kind of numbers you expect from a Heisman Trophy candidate playing against probably the weakest secondary he’ll see all year.

LaMichael James, last years leading risher and considered by many to be a close second to Luck in the pre-season Heisman race walked into Texas Stadium to face the depleted defense of the Tigers of LSU with high hopes for a breakout game in the season opener for the Ducks. The Tigers defense had different ideas and held James to just 54 yards on 18 carries. James averaged only 3 yards per carry and scored 1 touchdown. James was slightly limited in his play after suffering a minor ankle injury early in the game.

Trent Richardson of Alabama is the next Crimson Tide running back hoping to follow in previous Heisman winner, Mark Ingram’s shoes and his team faced off against cream puff Kent State in their opening game in Tuscaloosa this week. Many would have expected Richardson to jump out to an early season Heisman lead with openers against defenses of Kent State and Louisiana Lafayette next week, however Richardson averages only 3 yards per carry in a sub-par performance gaining just 37 yards on 13 carries.

Kellen Moore finished 4th in the Heisman voting last year and was considered by most to also be about 4th in line this year for the award given to college football’s most valuable player. Of the top 4 pre-season hopefuls, Moore had the best performance by a large margin. Even without his two top receivers of last year, Titus Young and Austin Pettis, who both play on Sundays this year, Moore was able to complete an outrageous 82.3 pct. of his passes as he completely dismantled the defense of the Georgia Bulldogs. Moore was helped by excellent protection as he found 9 different receivers on his way to completing 28 of 34 passes with 3 TD’s and 261 total yards. Moore was also without the Broncos deep threat receiver, Geraldo Boldewijn and never threw a pass over 25 yards in the Broncos romp of #19 Georgia.

Luck, James and Richardson will all enjoy more national television time and higher profile games this year than Moore simply due to their BCS conference affiliations. If week 1 however, is any indication of how the numbers might play out among the Heisman candidates this year it looks like Kellen Moore could get another invitation to NYC and possibly shuffle out of the Big Apple with the big trophy presented to college football’s most valuable player.

The NFL Is a Excellent Location For a Pro Football Sports Blog

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Inside the annals in the National Football League, there are many stories to mine for the pro football sports weblog. A standard NFL season combines all the drama and excitement of discovered in any adventure. Teams that had been supposed to win throughout the year uncover themselves inside the cellar, teams that were supposed to drop find themselves atop of the standings, and these who were supposed to be mired inside the middle in the standings could possibly be anyplace from 1st to final. The season in no way goes the way the pundits predict.

To follow all of the excitement of an NFL season, a fan could watch each and every game played during the season for the exclusion of every thing else, which includes family members, work and a social life, or the fan could stick to a well-written blog and let the blogger be the a single without having a social life.

A pro football sports weblog will cover almost everything from box scores to player functionality. The blogger will dissect the top rated games and describe why a player underperformed and who stepped as much as support his group win. The blogger may also cover the team’s mascot and cheerleaders.

For the reader who wants to adhere to his or her favored team, there is a pro football weblog for that. The San Francisco 49ers fan who lives in Philadelphia can locate a blogger who help the fan preserve in touch together with the goings on with the group.

Educated pro football bloggers will dissect offenses and defenses and make their rant understandable towards the casual fan. They may have connections together with the team which will get them unique interviews and insights towards the game’s greatest personalities.

A pro football blog may possibly also be concerned with all the Canadian Football League, so our neighbors for the north aren’t left out with the pro football blogosphere.

The NFL has such a prolonged and storied history from the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field to the teams which have moved out of a city and into yet another such as the Oakland-L.A.-Oakland Raiders that there exists greater than adequate materials to mine for any really wonderful series of blogs not just about today’s game, but about how the game has evolved and who has played in it and what they’ve done following the game. Johnny Unitas, Suggest Joe Green, Joe Montana, Fran Tarkenton and Joe Namath are some in the wonderful personalities which have defined this game, and they may be the subject in the next excellent pro football sports blog.

Giles The Cartoonist And The Giles Family

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Ronald ‘Carl’ Giles was one of the most well-known British post war cartoonists whose work appeared in the British newspapers The Daily Express and its sister paper The Sunday Express between the dates of 1943 and 1991.

He was born Ronald Giles in Islington, London in 1916. His school-friends dubbed him ?Karlo? after the actor Boris Karloff to whom they thought he bore a resemblance. This was later shortened to Carl and it stayed with him for the remainder of his life.

He left school when he was 14 years old and started work as an office boy for a Wardour Street film company where he was later promoted to an animator for cartoon pictures. This led in 1935 to his working for the famous producer and director Alexander Korda on the first full-length British sound-tracked colour cartoon film, The Fox Hunt.

After a brief time working in Ipswich, he joined Fleet Street in 1937. He worked as a cartoonist on the weekly newspaper Reynolds News where his work came to the attention of the editor of the Sunday Express and he was offered a job working for both the Daily Express and Sunday Express at the not inconsiderable salary of 20 guineas a week. His first cartoon for his new employers appeared in the Sunday Express in October 1943.

The 20 guineas a week proved a portent of greater fortunes to come as by 1955 he was being paid no less than 8,060 GBP a week for an output of three cartoons. He was now a wealthy man.

In 1959 he was awarded the OBE and among his greatest admirers and fans were members of the Royal family who often received originals of his wit.

His most famous character creations were The Giles Family who first appeared in August 1945. They were a family from the more affluent side of the British working class living in a suburban semi-detached house. The head of the family was Grandma a real battle axe of a person who anyone crossed at their peril. She is now immortalised as a bronze statue standing in Queen St Ipswich gazing up at the office where Giles used to work.

They were used by Giles to comment on a topical event in the news of the day and proved to be highly patriotic although cautious of authority. One amazing attribute of the family was that although their homes, pastimes and clothes reflected the changing values of the day, their ages remained unchanged although the cartoons ran for 46 years.

Today any middle-aged, middle class Englishman ( or woman) will have happy memories of the Giles Annual. This was a very welcome addition to the Christmas stocking and contained a assortment of Gile’s output for the previous year. For many years this compilation was selected by Giles himself.

Carl Giles passed away in 1995 and in 2000 he was voted ‘Britain’s Favourite Cartoonist of the 20th Century’.

Robbie Keane Eager For First Team Football

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Robbie Keane has revealed his desire to leave current club Tottenham Hotspur in the current transfer window in order to avoid another season of being left largely on the sub bench. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp seems to have fallen out of favour with the Republic of Ireland captain, favouring players such as Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko instead, even when the goals from the striking unit at White Hart Lane dried up for large parts of last season.

As a result of this dissatisfaction, Keane has reiterated his desire to leave the North London club, with the striker also eager to make it known that he won’t limit his future to London, a statement that may well have pricked the ears of clubs in the northern regions of the Premier League. The striker revealed that it’s “likely” he’ll be seeking a footballing challenge elsewhere but is unsure of the precise destination as it stands. Although he hasn’t “turned down anything” and there are still “a few people talking to the clubs”, the details of where Keane may end up this season remain unclear.

Keane will also want to make sure this coming season is a happier one than last season, when he enjoyed a less than successful spell on loan at London club West Ham. His time there was spoiled by a nasty combination of injury problems, too much competition in the forward positions, and the fact that the Hammers were eventually relegated from the Premier League in spite of his best efforts in front of goal.

Keane, despite Redknapp’s insistence on leaving him on the bench, has long been recognised as one of the most reliable strikers on both the domestic and international scene. For his country, he has scored 51 goals in just 108 appearances, while Spurs fans until last year regarded him as thoroughly deserving of a spot on the team sheet from the start of all their games.

Although Spurs fans will hope that the situation is resolved before the Premier League season kicks off in earnest over the next two weeks or so, Republic of Ireland fans will also be hoping for the same thing. The Republic are gearing up for two qualifying games at the start of September ahead of next year’s European Championships that could turn out to be must-win games, so they’ll need their captain fully fit and firing by then.

Are Wolves now dead certs for relegation?

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has been forced to admit that his side wasted the chance to move clear of the Premier League relegation zone last weekend after only managing a draw and the reward of one point against local side Birmingham, a team that had suffered a crushing 5-0 defeat at the hands of Kenny Dalglish’s resurgent Liverpool side in their previous league fixture.

With Craig Gardner seeing red for a pair of bookable offences before the half-time break, Wolves should have been able to capitalise upon their numerical advantage. However, McCarthy was unable to inspire his players to dominance throughout the remaining hour of play and, although his team narrowly edged possession, with 52% compared to their opponents’ 48%, and also managed to win more corners, they still only managed a couple of shots on target through the 90 minutes, much to the disappointment of their loyal fans.

In a 1-1 draw away from home, Wolves did manage to score the opener, with Steven Fletcher scoring with a pinpoint spot kick from the penalty spot after a foul from Birmingham’s Ben Foster, while Sebastian Larsson pulled his side level just before the half hour mark after earlier seeing a shot kept out by the post from a close range header, capitalising upon a defensive slip from ex-Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne.

McCarthy, who has spoken recently about there being a damaging lack of “magic” and inspiration in the Wolves squad, stated after the culmination of the game that it was “a missed opportunity against ten men”, while stating that he believes the relegation battle will only be decided on the last day of the season, which is only a couple of weeks away now.

The failure of the club to finish the game with three points was made to look even worse as many of their relegation rivals managed to secure at least a draw in their league games. With Blackpool and Wigan managing to secure a point apiece, and with Wigan actually unlucky not to beat Everton after displaying an attacking performance of real merit against David Moyes’s relatively in-form side, Blackburn also managed to pick themselves up after a difficult run to beat Owen Coyle and his inconsistent Bolton team to move into a safe position in the league table.

As it stands now, Wolves are in 19th position in the table, two points above West Ham, with West Ham boss Avram Grant apparently still believing that his team can escape relegation this season by winning seven points from their final three games, but missed the chance to move up to 17th place with a win. West Ham co-owner David Gold has been speaking this week about the likelihood of his side facing relegation and has admitted he may be forced to allow the England regulars in his squad to leave if Championship football does become a reality next season.

As the season enters its final weeks, neutral football fans will surely be content that there is still all to play for at both the top and bottom ends of the table, with the Red Devils and Chelsea still locked in a race for the league title and a handful of clubs, including the likes of Ian Holloway’s Blackpool now desperate to escape the relegation zone.

Lions End 19 Game Losing Streak With Win Over Redskins

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

The Detroit Lions nineteen game losing streak is over. On Sunday afternoon at Ford Field in Detroit the Lions held on for a 19-14 win over the Washington Redskins. The Lions hadn’t won a game since December 23, 2007 and had already tied the second longest losing streak in NFL history. It may not have been pretty, but the streak is now over and the Lions wont have to worry about comparisons to the 1976-77 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who lost a record 26 games in their first two seasons as an NFL expansion team.

If you were going to bet on a NFL football game this past weekend, the Lions may not have been the most attractive position. Sports betting enthusiasts who took Detroit as a +6 home favorite were rewarded with the outright victory. It was the Lions first pointspread cover of the 2009 NFL season, while the Redskins have yet to get the money for their backers this year.

Lions owner William Clay Ford said in postgame comments that he hopes the end of the streak signals a new beginning in the Motor City:

“We not only got the monkey off our back, we got King Kong off our back. I’m hoping that this gets us over that hump and gives us a winning attitude.”

Longtime Lion Dominic Raiola has played in Detroit for his entire nine year career, and he too expressed his relief that the streak had come to an end:

“I’ve always watched, but I’ve never been in this situation before. No team has been in this situation before. No one has gone 0-16 and then had to try to win a game the next year.”

Rookie QB Matthew Stafford had the best game of his young career, throwing for 241 yards on 21 of 36 passing with a touchdown and no interceptions. He gave his thoughts on his performance and the late game anticipation that preceded Detroit finally putting one in the win column:

“I’m having fun. It’s a great game we get to play. I figured I’d just let the crowd noise tell me what happened. When it got really quiet, I couldn’t take it, so I looked up, and saw them running, and then the tackle, and then I saw the clock was at zero.”

Detroit will try to start an actual winning streak next weekend as they take on the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. Detroit will host the Pittsburgh Steelers the following weekend before a road trip to Green Bay and game against the Packers on October 18th. Washington will host Tampa Bay next Sunday. They’ll play at Carolina on October 11th and then return home for a game against Kansas City the following weekend.
