Kellen Moore Establishes Himself As The Heisman Frontrunner in Week 1 Of College Football
Sunday, September 11th, 2011Week 1 of the college football season is now pretty much in the books and of the top 4 Heisman hopefuls Kellen Moore, senior QB for the Boise State Broncos has clearly established himself as the frontrunner in what many thought was a race that was set up for QB Andrew Luck of Stanford to lose.
Luck, as the pre-season Heisman favorite should have posted big numbers in the opener against lowly San Jose State. The Cardinals dominated the Spartans in every aspect of the game yet Luck had a less than stellar performance completing just 17 of 26 pass attempts for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. His 65 pct. completion rate and yardage were enough to lead Stanford to the win, but not the kind of numbers you expect from a Heisman Trophy candidate playing against probably the weakest secondary he’ll see all year.
LaMichael James, last years leading risher and considered by many to be a close second to Luck in the pre-season Heisman race walked into Texas Stadium to face the depleted defense of the Tigers of LSU with high hopes for a breakout game in the season opener for the Ducks. The Tigers defense had different ideas and held James to just 54 yards on 18 carries. James averaged only 3 yards per carry and scored 1 touchdown. James was slightly limited in his play after suffering a minor ankle injury early in the game.
Trent Richardson of Alabama is the next Crimson Tide running back hoping to follow in previous Heisman winner, Mark Ingram’s shoes and his team faced off against cream puff Kent State in their opening game in Tuscaloosa this week. Many would have expected Richardson to jump out to an early season Heisman lead with openers against defenses of Kent State and Louisiana Lafayette next week, however Richardson averages only 3 yards per carry in a sub-par performance gaining just 37 yards on 13 carries.
Kellen Moore finished 4th in the Heisman voting last year and was considered by most to also be about 4th in line this year for the award given to college football’s most valuable player. Of the top 4 pre-season hopefuls, Moore had the best performance by a large margin. Even without his two top receivers of last year, Titus Young and Austin Pettis, who both play on Sundays this year, Moore was able to complete an outrageous 82.3 pct. of his passes as he completely dismantled the defense of the Georgia Bulldogs. Moore was helped by excellent protection as he found 9 different receivers on his way to completing 28 of 34 passes with 3 TD’s and 261 total yards. Moore was also without the Broncos deep threat receiver, Geraldo Boldewijn and never threw a pass over 25 yards in the Broncos romp of #19 Georgia.
Luck, James and Richardson will all enjoy more national television time and higher profile games this year than Moore simply due to their BCS conference affiliations. If week 1 however, is any indication of how the numbers might play out among the Heisman candidates this year it looks like Kellen Moore could get another invitation to NYC and possibly shuffle out of the Big Apple with the big trophy presented to college football’s most valuable player.
