Cricket is not just a British Game!

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

It is widely held that cricket is a game with limited popularity, compared to football, being played widely only in a handful of countries like the UK, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and the Indian subcontinent. In fact, the game was very popular in a number of countries that were British colonies through the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Varied circumstances brought an end to the popularity of the game in many of these countries, including some mentioned below.

It is indeed unexpected that cricket was the most popular game in the USA during the late 18th and early 19th century. The first international cricket match may have been played between the USA and Canada and the event was attended by around 10,000 spectators. But after this, the country was overtaken by the civil war and at the end of it, a new game had appeared – baseball.

While cricket was the “gentleman’s game” generally played by the elite, baseball gained a repute as being a game for all. Unlike cricket, which needed a an appropriate pitch; baseball only needed a bat and a ball. This and the increase in popularity of games like basketball, golf and tennis in the country made cricket an all but extinct game in America.

Similar to the USA, cricket was an extremely popular game in Canada and was even announced the national game of the country. But the same aspects that affected the growth of the game in the USA, affected Canada too. The rough Canadian weather was another impediment that hindered the development of the game in the country. Over the last couple of decades, the game has seen a steady resurgence thanks to the steady flow of immigrants from the Indian Subcontinent, in which there is a large cricket community and the national cricket team was even selected to take part in three successive World Cups.

Cricket was the principal game in Malaysia until the country gained its independence. The basis for this was that the game was played largely by British men who lived there and once they left the country, the game was restricted to a small minority.

The sport was also a widely played game in the island nation of Fiji. Many cricket teams, en route to Australia and New Zealand, played a couple of games against Fiji. However, rugby has taken over as the most popular sport as is, perhaps, more well-matched to their physical attributes than playing cricket.

Another British colony, Burma, once beat Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in the late 1920s, although both teams included British players. This was one of the cases where the game spread to the masses. But most of the local Burmese were of Indian origin and with the invasion of Burma by the Japanese in 1941, the Indians had to go to their home country and with this, the popularity of the game also waned.

Review: 2011 Easton Rival XXL (-9) BBCOR Baseball Bat

Monday, September 5th, 2011

My son has a new favorite bat every season it seems. Judging by his loyalty to the same one for the past two seasons, the Easton 2011 BD11XL Rival XXL (-9) Senior League Bat may be his favorite of favorites. I’m not the one using it, but I can base this review on what he’s told me about it, the sound if makes when the ball is hit and, of course, the on field results. The Easton Rival worked out great this past spring during his 11U Travel Ball season.

We moved to the Easton Rival after using the ComBat Stealth for a few season. That was a great bat, but I did miss the PING sound that we get from the THT100 alloy Easton Rival versus the THUD from the ComBat composite bat. With a bigger barrel at 2 5/8″ the Easton Rival also provides a larger sweet spot. Mix in an ultra-thin handle with just the right amount of flex and you’ve got a bat that will provide great bat speed and power through the hitting zone.

Maybe it’s the sound it makes or the way it feels to swing it, but I also find the bat gives my son confidence. We may know that a good swing comes from the hitter not the bat, but any extra advantage a hitter can get psychologically won’t hurt either. Simply, the baseball flies off the bat and the hitter recognizes the feeling. Additionally, with it’s sleek colors and graphics, the bat looks cool to an 11-year-old.

No real cons when it comes to the Easton Rival. My son has never felt stinging in his hands and the bat is incredibly durable, having help up so far over 80 plus games and countless rounds of batting practice.

Perhaps the most telling indicator is how the other players react to the Easton Rival. My son’s Easton Rival was the most popular bat in the dugout and it wasn’t long before there more Easton Rivals on the bat rack. The kids just love to wing it and swear by its power.

At $179.99 the price point is great compared to what I’ve paid for bats in the past. Considering the durability, results and use we’ll get from it, I think there’s great value in it. Also, at that price we’ll probably be looking to add the Easton 2011 BD12XL Rival XXL (-5) Senior League Bat to the bat bag for the next season.
